  • Pick-ups...right?? (long, sorry)

    History:

The bike has been running really great since the valve job. Since then I tried out an ultrasonic cleaner on the carbs that I recently gained access to. They came out looking great, but I think they were pretty spotless to start with. Had quite a few nice rides this spring, running great. Then, about 2 weeks ago I go out and fire it up and on full choke, it starts backfiring pretty frequently (never happened before).

    Now:

Been pretty much the same since then. Pops a lot all through the warm up and then besides not idling as nice as nice and some off start stutters, the backfiring would pretty much be gone. Didn't notice any other performance problems. I want to rule out carbs and tried leaning the mixture screws a half turn to 3 out and synced. Took it to school yesterday, same thing. On my way home after getting into town, I noticed that it sounded different. It kinda sounded like a dirt bike. I was running at about 3-4k rpm so I shouldn't have been able to really hear the pause between exhaust thumps. I gave the throttle a quick twist and I still had pretty decent response. When I stopped at a light it was idling really rough. It seemed to be getting worse as I pulled up to the house and killed it.

Tonight I pulled the timing cover off but visually, I can't find any problems with the wires.

    Any comments, ideas, suggestions?

It takes more than just a viausl check. Get in there while it is running and pull and tug aggressively on the wires, especially where they are pinched ib the retainer clips. Don't worry abo breaking the wires by doing this. If this is all it takes, they were broken to start with and you'll have found your problem. The write-up in the tech section has some pictures to follow.
