If you are looking to buy, go with the mercury manometer stick. If you are cheap like many of us, you may want to check out the tech tips on how to build your own. Here is one I posted and tried recently. vacuum sync tool

Hey renegade_xs11g, don't you live in Rockford? If not...never mind. I'm 40 min. from there. I have a 4 gauge sync you can use. I'd help if you want. You wouldn't have to buy 1.

Only the '82 XJ 1100 needs the YICS tool, along with other Yamaha bikes beginning in '82 and a few years after that.

Look here at your motor. If it starts with 10M-****** Then it's an '82 motor with YICS. Otherwise, you probably don't have it.

Having a motor that wasn't originally in the bike is pretty common after 25+ years.

              Carbtune Pro

If you don't mind spending the money for a tool that will last forever I recommend the Carbtune Pro http://www.carbtune.com/http://www.carbtune.com/ . This tool does not contain mercury they are solid and you don't have to worry about sucking the mercury out of this. Cost a little bit more but is well worth the investment. You might also want to check out the colortune they sell.
