Carb Gasket

I need to clean my carbs and the needle and valve assembly.
The dealer said i would need a new gasket but he doesnt have one.
Can I use that gasket material that comes in a tube or do you
guys have a better solution?

I would stay faaar away from using rtv or other type of sealant on the carbs.. You can cut paper gasket material to fit and it will work fine...just don't get any with cork in it!

You *may* need a new gasket - I believe these all came with reusable rubber gaskets, but after enough time and wear they can break...especially if you don't take enough care when removing the float bowls. I usually tap around the bowl with the handle of a screwdriver or rubber mallet to break the seal.

Also, partsnmore has a kit that comes with gasket, float needle and seat for pretty cheap - just make sure you get the right kit (78-79 or 80-81)

Roll your own

Go to any auto parts store and buy a sheet or a roll of thin (about 3/32 inch) gasket paper, and trace the old gasket out on the new gasket paper, and then just cut them out. I recently bought a roll at O'Reillys for $3 and change, and made two valve cover gaskets, and four carb gaskets, and I still have enough scrap pieces left over to make some cam chain tensioner gaskets.

Thanks guys. I will probally wait until I order the carb kit from the
link that Snow sent. If I'm going to go thru removing the carbs, then I might as well have new parts to put in to it. Is there anything else that maybe needs changed while I'm there?

check your o-rings. The PO of my bike soaked mine in carb cleaner. They are as crunchy as cheerios now. Ebay had some gaskets and o-rings sold together. Hopefully that's all I need to get Bastardbike on the road!
