  • Pipes glowing red?

I notice the red glow on my 4-1 headers, this can't be good. Could this mean it's running to lean? also it appears that 3 of the pipes r turning blue and 1 is'nt. Running (stock) 137.5 m jets and 42.5 p jets, K&N filter in stock air-box w/ drilled holes on bottom.
She runs alright but I know there's more hp that needs to be unleashed. Appreciate the help!
By the way this is one of the best forums out there.

    "LEAN, LEAN, LEAN!"

    Way too lean.
    Or way too hot.
I know that you aren't just sitting there letting the bike idle for hours.
Pipes will glow if left running without air moving to cool it, but you know this.
(Have a quad in the shop.. kid likes to leave it running while he stands around and talks to his loser friends. Cost him a new piston... and several minutes of enduring my mockery)
I'd go up a few jet sizes on the mains, and clown with the pilot screw, were I you.
Way too lean, considering your modifications.

Pro has it correct, as usual. You can also try to PM MRO, as he lives near you. He has had some experience with jetting, and can probably help.
But then, he may not like me volunteering his time.

        volunteering his time

        No problem, $85.00/hr (i'm cheep )

Can't get it sorted, let me know and will give you a hand if you want.

Not sure if I've got any larger size jets on the self thou.
Will check if you need some.

Like Prom says it sounds way too lean. Easy to check your plugs and if the insulators are burning white, white you are definately in a lean condition. Also, how does the plug in the cylinder that is not turning the header blue look?

Just a thought, check the FLOAT LEVEL on the carbs. If the one that isn't glowing is different, try that setting for the rest. They should be about 1 1/16", or 27mm on the '79. At least, that's what I run mine at.

Hey thanks fellows.....I was thinking LEAN too. Viewed plugs and they where white.........Already leveled floats (#1 float was off a bit). I'm thinking the only thing left is the jet size? If I continue to have the same problem................HEY MRO, I'M GOING TO GIVE A HOLLER YOUR WAY!
                YA'LL KEEP IT REAL......PEACE!

Well, with the standard 25 - 26mm float height, the 42.5 and 137.5 jet combination is a good one, even with K&N & drilled airbox, but a 142.5 main jet should be better, white porcelain on the plugs is no real indication of lean mix, more to reading plugs than that, also if the motor's idling for ages, the engine temp just keeps climbing and climbing anyway, doesn't level off, might just be a matter of unscrewing the mix screws another twist or two to keep the heat under control, or go to a 45 pilot too, but clean the plugs and sit the bike idling hot for a few minutes, then check them, should be some carbon down inside the porcelain insulator at least, no carbon at all is bad news, but over-rich just slightly is fine for idle. (don't know what the emission testers over there would have to say on that one though) Also check the slide needles aren't adjusted on too low a notch.

                      Just got home.
No older carb parts left, (No BS34 II bits, been sold )

                      "137.5 m jets and 42.5 p jets" = stock

What are your floats set at? (book says 25.7 mm, + - 1mm)
(if set near stock would lower one mm)

Also, how many turns out are your piolt screws?

Send me a PM with your # and I'll give ya a call

Oh, I had a good one today. Kid came in complaining of an oil leak so I checked it out for him (Oily residue on the rear of the engine, by the front sprocket.)
"When did this oil leak first appear?"
                        "Oh, about two days ago."
"When did you last oil your chain?"
                        "Uhm... about two days ago."
"Next time, don't use the whole can of spray lube on the chain, makes a hell of a mess.

                            Hi Pro,
don't mock the child, he done good. He oiled his chain, which is better than letting it run dry, then he noticed a problem beyond his area of competence and asked for expert advice.

Fred, you are absolutely correct. Thank you for reminding me of such.
Truthfully... I didn't lay into him, but also pointed out that three inches is too much slack for a chain and that the chain and both sprockets were shot.
