  • Clutch Plate Bolt issues

    Hey Gurus,

What is the torque setting supposed to be on the Clutch plate bolts? Reason I ask is that I just got down easy outing a clutch bolt after re-installing the clutch after the second gear fix (stole time from work this evening, I've had twenty minutes in two weeks to work on it)

If I read the Yamaha Shop Manual correctly, it's something like 7 foot pounds. I was using a click torque wrench and it snapped the head off the bolt like butter. I wasn't even close.

I am off to NAPA tomorrow for new bolts since it looks as if the existing clutch bolts actually stretched a little. Any one ever see that?

7.4 ft lbs is correct, but it is probably better to use a 3/8 inch deflecting beam torque wrench. The one I use is an ft lbs/inch lbs type. I have never seen steel bolts stretch when used in aluminum. I would think the aluminum would strip before the bolts stretched. Yours may have had a stress crack in it, and torquing may have been what it took to break it.

I didn't trust my el cheapo wrench for those VERY critical low torque apps

I think I used a clicker torque wrench on mine, it was in inch pounds, did the conversion...12 : 1 I think...it's been a while, worked ok for me, no issues. have a nice day and ride safe .

Papa Gino, what did it feel like when you were pulling on the wrench, just before the bolt snapped? 84 inchpounds (7 footpounds) is not very much at all. I wonder if a PO might have got all confused and cranked those poor little bolts up to 84 footpounds by mistake, than you happened along with the 'straw that broke the camel's back'. You say the bolts look like thay had been stretched?

Ken, it was still pulling easy. In fact, I guess I should have been suspicious since I had hit the point where all the bolt caps were snug on the face of the throwout bearing assembly. Resistance never increased on the wrench, even after a turn.

At the time I thought it might have been the fact that even though I was on the face, the springs might still be compressing,

After breaking one of mine I reinforced my clutch plate.

I drilled and tapped all 6 holes from the back (engine) side of the clutch plate. I then threaded 6 bolts in from the backside to where they would meet the star plate bolts (used red locktite). Then I cut the heads off the reinforcing bolts.

Now it has steel running the entire length of the aluminun post.

HERE is the link to the fix Maximan did. I just did all 6 of mine while it was out. When I do the clutch on my LG I'll do the same thing (and to the one I broke, as a spare).
