  • I think I am Lucky!

I just changed the middle and final drive oil. I got the middle plug out easy enough and had to take a chisel and hammer to the final filler plug, but it wasn't too tough after reading the threads on how to.

The issue was, the oil hardly flowed enough to come out!
I let it glop out for about 2 minutes the I ran some fresh oil through to flush it.

Wow...It was reallllly black and thick. I mean it was scary thick.
I changed it and ran down the block amazed at the shifting difference it seemed to make.

Brent made a comment on another thread about how the rear wheel can lock up if not properly maintained.

    Somehow I'm feeling lucky!

    Hey Jim,

Yeah, sounds like you were way overdue for those changes. However, it shouldn't have really made much difference in the shifting, since the gears are in the Engine oil. The middle drive is just the directional transfer gears. But, they are the ones known to get burned and frozen when the middle drive accidentally runs dry due to leaks or even forgetfullness in not refilling after a change....don't laugh, folks and dealers have done it!

I thought that too about the shifting, but when I ran down the road it really did seem like things were more effortless. Could very well be my imagination as I was pretty happy about acomplishing the task, but I know my little Half-Breed is healthier because of it!
