There are two types of cruise controls: more common unit that requires a vacuum source, and all-electronic units. Vacuum systems cost less than $100.00 on sale, all electronic units are around $200.00 or so. For an installation story and directions, see:

Big cruisers, such as the Yamaha Venture, came with cruise control as factory equipment.

Mechanical throttle locks by Vista Cruise and MEP can help out and work well in fairly flat areas. Price in the $20.00 - $30.00 range. Another option is a Throttle Rocker, gaining in popularity recently, which lets you take the strain off your fingers. There is a Tech Tip on this somewhere on XS11.com.....

I have both, and love both. I use the throttle lock every once in a while to rest my hand. Lots of hills around here, so it is used rarely. But, using it just a few moments every once in a while allows me to go longer.
My wrist rest is from the XS11. com Tech tips. I made it several years ago, and like it too. I have it positioned to act as a sort of gas pedal. In the twisties I hold on, but down the more straight lines, I have my fingers hooked over the grip, and lean down with the heel of my hand. It is a more relaxed position.

I highly recommend the David Sproul method Jerry provided a link to above. Use the Audoivox unit, available at Pep Boys and others for about $100. You will spend another $20 or so on connectors and heat-shrink if you do it right. Expect to spend several hours installing it.

It is motorcycle cruise control greatness.
