Sounds like a clerk made a typo...unless that is a special European model?

Hi Trapper Hey the RS on your title is the MN State code for it being a Motorcycle, RS is stamped on all 3 of my bike titles
As was stated earlier tell the parts dealer you have 81 XS1100 Special just be aware that parts are hard to find for these things depending on what ya need theres places online that
have good sources just ask and do some searching
lot of the material has already been covered
Did you get any of that snow that fell yesterday
We got about 8" up here

Hi Ljay40. I'm new to this group and not sure how these postings work yet. We had aout 2"of snow that didn't melt. It would be nice to know for sure what model it is becouse I have gotten the wrong parts 3 times.

What is the serial number that is stamped into the right side of the steering neck, and on the engine, just above the oil fill hole?

                              Hey Trapper,

That number from the Engine IS an 81SH, however, engines can get swapped into different frames. The frame is what is registered. The VIN # is on the side of the steering head, stamped into it on the right side. Check to make sure it's the same as the Engine #, then you will be sure you have the OEM frame and engine, and that it IS an 81SH.

Other clues are a recessed groove in the sides of the covers over the crank, the timing cover and the ALT cover. Also, remove the seat and check the TCI, it should also have the 4Ro designation. Under the timing cover, you will have a vacuum advance, but just a solid plate, no centrifugal advance mechanism....done away with in 81. The special has the front axle on the front side of the lower fork sliders, the Standard are on the END of the lower sliders. Round headlight, turn signals, gauges = Special. Square gauges, headlight, larger tank with knee recesses=Standard.
