  • XJ/XS interchangeability

    Hi all,

I'd like to add an oil cooler to my XJ. I've
found one from a 79 XS. Am I correct in
assuming the adapter plate will work
with my bike? The filter housing should be the same, right? Anything else to
    consider?

    Thanks,

    Dave

Adapter plate will bolt up just fine. No problems with any clearances. Housings are identical, use same filter and O-rings. If the bolt head is damaged in any way, now would be a good tiome to replace it with an after-market bolt with a larger head. The adapter plate should have the extension bolt with it; this bolt screws in to the original bolt hole, and the stock bolt threads into the extension bolt.

Two points to consider. If this is an original Yamaha cooler, replace the rubber oil lines. They are now 20+ years old and have probably deteriorated. Original installation had a couple of support tabs welded to the frame down tubes. Lines were bolted to these mounts to keep then routed bewtween the exhaust header pipes. Your XJ does not have these mounts, so you will need to fabricate something to hold the lines in place.

Cooler itself should bolt into place just fine using the existing bolt holes in the frame tubes. These are located just under the tripple-T. If you are running a frame-mounted fairing you may need to devise a bracket for the cooler.

      Thanks Jerry,

I was wondering about the routing
of the hoses. I'll figure something out.

It's a Lockhart cooler. Not stock, but
I assume it's fairly old. I don't think they've made them for years now. New hoses are cheap insurance.

        Hi Dave,
I bought a 1982 Xj1100 maxim last week. I am either going to have to put an engine in it or part it out. I will know in about a week what i am going to do with the bike. It has a very nice complete oil cooler setup. Email me off forum at billwoods@wideopenwest.com next week and i will let you know.
I will try to post a picture in the HELP - I need to but an engine Post!
