I didn't see a post by Da Bubble, or a link to a question.

      here's the lowdown

      Chop,

My name is Scott. I came and saw your bike after work one day last summer. I've got my bike running but it still isn't right. I installed the old jets since the new ones seemed to be too rich. The plugs were black and sooty so I thought it was rich. Today I pulled the carbs and reset the floats to 27mm from the gasketing surface. Shouldn't that make them run leaner? I drove it shortly tonight and it's much worse. Now it backfires and barely runs. With the floats at 25.7 it ran almost right but it still cut out under hard accelleration. Do you have any clue what to do? I'm about ready to start parting it out on ebay!

ALso, did you ever have this many problems with yours and once you get it tuned does it stay that way or am I going to constantly be fighting this thing?

      I hate this bike.

OK, now that you've gotten that out of your system,

Are you sure it's a carb problem? Ignition troubles can cause similar symptoms.

Have you changed to a fresh set of plugs or thoroughly cleaned the plugs? Plugs, once they are fouled, will misfire, especially under load no matter what carb changes you make.

Fresh plugs, reset floats to 25mm (or 1 inch) and test for spark. If it still misfires, do the pickup coil wire fix.

I think this is the original post.

Also was thinking that pickup wires need to be verified/fixed as well as checking for vacuum leaks at intake boots and butterfly shaft seals.

What about the vacuum advance unit connected to the wrong port?

This is the order that I think it should be done.

            1. Get the floats to about center of range,
            Adjust vacuum synch near idle
Get the idle mixt screws close

For the following, color the plugs using throttle chop.
            2. test/replace mains near wide open throttle
            3. Adjust midrange if you have an adjustment on the needle
            4. test/replace idle jets if your mixture screws are less than 1 turn, increase jet size; if they are over 3.5 turns, decrease pilot jet sizes. (This is iffy, depending on the pilots that are available)
