  • Fifth Gear Shift Fork Blues

Hey all, finally got the cluster back in this morning, but I am having trouble getting the fifth gear shift fork to fall into place on the gear and drum. I can get it on the drum and almost on the gear, but not both.

I have stared at TC's shift fork page for at least two cups of cofee now and can't quite fathom how that will work for someone working from the bottom.

I have tried sliding fifth gear in as I try to mate the fork to it and the drum, but just get jammed up.

Anyone have a suggestion as to how to get that devil back in from the bottom? The other two forks are in proper place, this is all that is holding me up from buttoning it up and getting on to the front brakes.

Have you checked this link ? This is one of the earlier write-ups, based on going in from the bottom.

I did follow that link earlier in the process. I have forks 2 and 3 in place, I can't get fork 1 (forkin' thing) to fall into place. It fell out of its own accord during disassembly (probably why I can't seem to figure it out) so I figure I shouldn't have to work too hard to get it into place.

Alright, figured it out. I was using a different 1st fork from the parts that I got from Andreas since it looked beeter than mine (not scored at the leading edge). I got a hair and then filed out the scoring on the old one and put it up there. It dropped right in. Near as I can tell the better looking one is slightly tweaked. Not very visible to the naked eye, but the forks are just slightly out of line.

        Proceding with re-assembly.
