  • Sticky Brake Pedal

On my '81 Special, my rear brake bedal is sticky. I've already addressed the "spooge hole" issue and cleaned out the master cylinder and also bled the system to insure that there is no air in the line. It's probably due for a rebuild, but it works and releases fine for now. I think the problem is with the the pedal lever mechanism because it is tough to push and doesn't spring back like I think it should. I can't see a way to disassemble it so I can lubricate it properly (the Special doesn't have a grease cap like the Standard does). Clymer gives a schematic but not a procedure for a tear down. I don't see any thing holding the bolts on and when I unclipped the main spring it still wouldn't come off. Any suggestions would be appreciated on how I can get this thing moving more freely. Thanks.

    Hey Malber,

It's just a simple interference fitting. Once you remove the bolt/nut combo holding the lever onto the shaft....I think you'll need to fully remove the bolt, there is probably a recessed notch cut into the shaft where the bolt fits thru, and won't allow the pedal to slide off until it's removed, then just tap the shaft out towards the inward portion of the frame. Then you should be able to see and remove/clean the accumulated rust from the shaft and mounting hole, then apply grease, put it back together!

Thanks TC. I wasn't able to take it completely out, but enough to lubricate the shaft and all the parts. Now that it's fully lubbed up I know how it's supposed to work.

TC is right, I just did mine. Yuch, what a mess. It's much better now though. Be sure to pay attention to the spring on the inner frame side.
