  • Questions for XJ1100J

    Greetings!
    I just bought a XJ110J (I add the final "J" because that's what's on the owners manual )
I'm curious what I'm missing between the two center exhaust pipes. There is a little oil leaking out. I'm not sure if it's maybe where the tach cable goes? Also does this model have petcocks that actually shut off as opposed to vacuum? There is an off setting on them.
Got a great deal on the bike. Engine sounds good, but missing first gear. Looking forward to getting it roadworthy and comparing it with my XS Triple.
    TIA

That would be the cam chain tensioner. They are prone to leakage. Use the search tab at the top of this page and look for threads concerning the oil leak problem and how to repair it.
Thereis on off position on the petcock. The handle should point to the front of the bike to turn them off. Handle down is on, up is reserve, and to the rear is prime. There are rebuild kits available for them.

      John,
Thanks for the reply. I took a picture of what I have and I think maybe I lost a cap or something. Also I read the post about rebuilding the petcocks by Nate and I have the special gas line configuration. If I understand your response with the petcocks in the off position there is a physical stop. The stop on the Standard vacuum petcocks is the "o"ring on the plunger sealing the hole? Either way I have a gas leak somewhere because my air cleaner is leaking gas at the joint.

How are you guys putting pictures in your posts if you can't add attachments?

No, there is no 'stop' on the petcock. The handle will spin 360 degrees. Open the petcock, and you will see a rubber disc, it is called the valve, with some round holes in it. On the back of the lever, you will see a 'Trough' of sorts. That is what either directs the fuel flow, or shuts it off. When you have it apart, sometimes you can flip the rubber gasket with the holes (valve) over, and the back of the handle may have a burr on it. That can be removed by placing a piece of fine (220) grit on the table and running the back of the handle back and forth over it to smooth out any rough areas. Go to this link and navigate throuh it until you find the petcock-piping page. Look at item # 22,35.

If the fuel is reaching the airbox, then you have leakage past the float needle and seat, or the O ring that seals the seat to the carb body. Those are know to leak after time. The seat is held in by the small phillips haed screw, and horse shoe clip. Be careful when you pull the seat from the carb. You can distort it easily. What I do is tofind a drill it that will just fit into the seat, and place it shank end first into the seat, and then grip the seat with some pliers. The drill bit will keep it from distorting the seat. If it does get distorted, then you will need to buy a new needle and seat, but hey can be bought. Prometheus can probably get them for you.

          Hey Kevin,

Welcome and congrats on your machine. The cam chain tensioner has a rubber plug on the end of it, but it can dry up, and leak, fall out, etc.! Several ways to seal it back up.

Highly recommend looking thru the tech tips, SCROLLING DOWN FROM THE MAIN FORUM PAGE, not just the links in the Left hand Yellow Column, cause there are several newer tips that are NOT linked thru the column!

You'll want to check out the TRANNY repairs section, you'll learn all about your 1st and possibly pending 2nd gear repair job.

          Good Luck!
