question you are going to hear from me (today at least). Every bike I have had in the past had a lock on the side of the seat and when you turned the key the seat "popped" open and allowed access to the battery.

On my newly aquired bike there is a key on the left hand side but when I turn the key all it does is release the top part of "C" shaped piece of metal (for locking up the bike I am assuming). So what is the trick for lifting the seat? I never asked when I bought the bike.

Get a spanner and loosen the two bolts under the seat just behind the top shock mounts. Slide the bolts forward and lift the seat.

      A spanner... indeed!
We Northern Hemisphere types call it a 14 mm wrench.
The "C" shaped clip is for the "D" ring on your helmet's chin strap so you can lock up your helmet. (Take your head out of it first)

That's funny, cos a spanner is what we call some of you Northern Hemisphere types as well.

        Fuggit, Use a socket.

Somehow, Throwing a "wrench" in the works just doesn't sound right.

Whats wrong with that. MY family back to the days tools were invented called them things spanners. Hey Pro, at least you know what it is hes talking about. I stopped in my school's auto shop to borrow a 14 spanner and they gave me a strange look. Then I said just get a crescent wrench. That yielded more stares. After that I went and got the spanner myself. My seat was indeed loose.

            Hey Scopey,

Prom has answered your question, but here's some more info. IF you'll go to the LINKS forum from the MAIN FORUM PAGE, then look for the thread for PDF owner's Manual, you'll find one for an 81H/SH. I know it's not your machine, but most of the mechanics are the same, and can give you help with basic maintainance and location of parts, oil drain holes....like the middle gear which is NOT supplied or shared by the main engine oil!!!

ALso, edit your profile/signature to include your specific model, you state it's a 79 but is it a special or standard?? There are differences and can affect the type of info we provide!

That C clip thingy is the helmet lock if no one mentioned it.

You can use it to hang your adjustable metric spanner also.
