  • Cam chain cavity seal

    Hi all,
    Am finally starting to put my XS's head back together - have had a nightmare with work and stuff. Mine was the one that I snapped the spark plug off in the head and had to take it to a machine shop.
    Anyway I have fitted my new cam chain ( a little adventure in itself) and have put my new head gasket on - now it says fit new "cam chain cavity seal with the tabs down". My (supposed?) complete gasket set does not seem to have one of these and I don't remember taking one off either. Is it an age thing? ie: something they did on earlier bikes that was dropped on later ones? Mine is an '81 and my manual is '79 to '81.
    If someone could put my mind at rest before I pop my head on that'd be great. I'm hoping to get most of it back together tomorrow and even have it running by next week

    on your rebuild do not use the cam tunnel seal gasket. Your "complete" gasket kit does not include that metal gasket because it is not needed.

        Just happened to be sitting here and by the way ... When your torquing the head nuts use a high heat anti seize thread treatment made for that job so the values reached are more accurate. Auto supply shops and machine shops that do auto work have the stuff you need.
        DON'T FORGET THAT THE 2 NUTS AT THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE CAM CHAIN TUNNEL TAKE A LOWER TORQUE. Over look this and you will break the head.

            Over look this and you will break the head.
            Not the head, but the protruding hump on the cylinder.
            (JBWeld, five years, leaks a little)
