About those shells

Hi Snow,
I was looking at the pics of the bearing shells installed in the rod & in the rod end cap. Those shells used or what? There's nasty discoloured mottling on the shell bearing surfaces and all the shells I've ever seen were either bright & shiny or smooth & matte. Not mottled like those ones. If they were mine I'd be worried enough to look for another set.

Fred, those were NOS from an old rod bearing kit from another forum member. I'm not going to worry too much about them unless I get some noise after running her through break-in. I was a little worried at first, but I *think* (but haven't confirmed) that it's just the coating on top of the metals that is discolored.

Best to be sure beforehand

Hi Snow,
count up the hours it'd take to tear that motor down & rebuild it again if those shells DO start to rattle. Then there's what may happen to the journals once the rattle starts.
I'd take a REAL good look at those shells
under a strong light using either a powerful magnifying glass or a microscope on a low setting BEFORE I built the engine back up.

Nice job on the pics. I have to agree. Nothin like tearin a motor down twice. I'd make "SURE" that your not gonna have problems with bad bearings. Unless ya like spendin time wrenchin, which is cool also, Long as it's a spare motor.

As you noticed, the shells were in the original packing. I didn't even look at them! I hope they are good, as I plan on using some of the others in the set for my rebuild. I'll have to pull and look at them once I get back to California... for now, I'm in Longmont, CO.

I figured you might not have looked at them as they were still in the factory stryofoam - no worries, I'm just ordering a new set from Zanotti's just to be on the safe side after considering how much money that I don't have (~$600) and time (15+ hours so far) I have spent so far on this 3 month project... I just want this engine to be reliable for the next 25 years.

It'll probably only take me an extra 2-3 hours to change out the rod bearings again, so I think it's worth it to be on the safe side.

I just looked at your Pics and I would be inclined to believe that there is surface corrosion on them which can easily occur when parts are stored for long periods of time. they were likely stored in a humid environment at some point in the past. Changing them out as you have decided to do is the way to go.
