exhaust header studs

Does anyone know the specs on these things? lengths, diameters, pitch? I just bought a 1980 xs1100g with a 1981 xs100sh engine but someone put a suzuki exhaust and studs on it. Theres a local nuts and bolts guy who can make anything, but he wants the OEM specs. Also the dealership wants close to $100 for a full set of studs and nuts, I'm not that rich. Any help would be great!

I have custom stainless steele bolts at M8x1.25 IIRC...stock length unknown though...maybe someone will chime in......

Chop is right, M8 x 1.25 pitch. Checked with a pitch gauge! According to BikeBandit, they list that part at 15mm long, still available:

You might be able to find this size at a good local hardware store/ auto store?

Fastenal carries that thread pitch in stock...Use the grey aluminum based thread anti-seize. I've had no problems removing the bolts.....

If you should have troule removing the current studs, you can heat the area around them with a propane torch. Place two nuts on the stud, and tighten them up to jam them against each other, and then put a wrench on the inner one to back the stud out. You can install the new ones the same way, only place the wrench on the outter nut to run them in.

The studs on the '81 Special I'm working on right now are 30mm long.

That's all right, TC, we've all done it once or twice, or maybe even more. Would have been interesting, though, if Casey had gone ahead and got himself some 15mm studs made..

Don't the stock ones change size and thread direction?

But the allen head single bolts are better with 3-4 washers. There is a set on ebay right now, but I would get them new...ACE hardware has that thread pitch....should have 30-40mm lengths as well....chop

The studs are all right hand thread, on both ends.

john's right. I put allen bolts which are right handed....duh...just do yourself a favor and use anti-sieze. I have seen too many bolts broken in the heads.....
