  • Parked on sidestand, outside, to long

A couple of years ago I found rust protrudeing through the lower left frame rail. I did a temp repair and it lasted till now. I inspected the area the other day and found the problem was worse then before. Soooo,, I attemped to repair the area. The tubes were so thin, I couldn't get any weld without blowing through so here's the fix.
What my attempted weld turned out to be,

    During the operation.

The finished fix on the frame.

The piece was pecision cut ( hack saw ) and fitted without tweekin the frame.
If your gonna park it outside in the wether, make sure ya put her on the center stand.

    Czekus,
    A most impressive repair.
Either the photo is bad, or it's my monitor... but I can't clearly see just what you've done. Was the new tube welded in place? Was the new tube section of a larger diameter, and you stretched the frame and slid the section over the remaining tube?

Pics were taken on a camera phone, Sooo not very good. I saved a piece of the frame from the XJ that I parted out. Cut the bad piece out of the whole frame, trimmed a piece from the doner and welded in place. Left side, lower part of the frame. I guess this is a good place for water to hang out if it would happen to get into the frame. I wanted to cut out the entire area of the frame ( from the stearing head to the front foot pegs ) but was concerned about getting everything staight and aligned. I'll put the motor back in today as well as the swing arm. I might just have this thing back together in time for some clear weather riding. Spring's just around the corner.

Nice repair job on that. Would have to look REAL close to find it. Even closer once the engine is back in the frame.

I guess i need too put a center stand back on , because it didn't come with one on, some removed it in the past

this past winter in utah my xs 1100 was outside covered with a tarp, as it got down to 18 below zero leaning only on the kick stand only

You may want to see if it is even possible. Some people will remove the center stand to make room for an exaust system. It may be more work then you want to get into.

Maybe sitting on the centerstand will allow it to rust on both sides instead of just one .

My bikes are on the centerstand 99.999% of the time.

I think that a PO and being in the rust belt might have something to do with the rust. She's in a heated garage now and still gets parked on the center stand when not being riden. I use the center stand, not because of the rust thing, Call it a phobia if you will, but I have a hard time thinking about starting a cold engine with the oil puddled to one side of the engine. It showed when I opened up the motor to do the top end. Left side great, Right side wear from lack of lube.
