  • Engine warm up

I`d like to know how long do most warm up there XS11`s ??
The reason is , this is the first bike i have owned (i have owned alot in 30 + years of riding) that takes a real long time to warm up and get going smooth down the road with out bogging down. I have owned big 4 cyl CC bikes before and & i don`t think it took that long to get going, Hell my 1700 Roadstar takes a 10`th of time to get going. The bike is completely stock with only 11K on it & the 2 original owners were no youg pups so it was never beaten on. If you didn`t look down , it`s a 80 Midnight special.

    Thanks Gerard

Just me... but I turn my enrichener on full, start it, and let it sit there for about a minute, until it starts popping a bit from the rich mixture. I then climb on, move the enrichener to about half, and take off. As soon as I get the rpm's over 3 or 4, I take the enrichener off all the way and ride. It doesn't bog on me this way.. but everyones carbs are at differenrt stages of "Clean-ness", jetting is diffferent, and different motor compression and timings. When I was running really rich last year, I could start it and immediately take off.

Just realize I have the XJ with the enrichener lever on the bars.... so it may be a different deal with the levers on the XS's.

Just my 2 cents worth.... if it's worth that!

      Thank !

The carb were rebuilt by last owner & prof done since the bike sat in his garage for years. He got it running so his grand son would have a bike to ride. But after he took it for a ride he didn`t like it & really like his dad CB900 custom. So as soon as his dad said do you know anyone that wants to buy it , i said sure ME

I warm mine up enough that it will idle smoothly without the chock on. I take it easy until she reachs at normal operating temperature. Yamaha however does not consider the engine to be "warmed" up until the is normal throttle response. As large as these engines are they are still classified to be small engines and a proper warm-up is rather important.

I only let mine warm up as long as it takes to back it out of the driveway, and into the street. When it is cold, I use half choke for about the first couple hundred yards, and then it is choke off. When the weather is warm, I don't need any choke at all. As soon as the oil hits the bearings, I'm on my way.

That warm fuzzy feeling between your legs!

            Hey Confish,

It all depends on the weather. If it's rather cold out, it will take longer for your machine to warm up being an air cooled beast. The manual as well as my humble experiencesay is that you use full choke/Enrichening for startup. IF you want to stand around several minutes until the rpm's start to creep up, that's your choice. But as long as the OIL light has gone out, it's lubing, and I get on it and start rolling. Drop to half choke/enrichening for about a mile or just a few blocks, and then drop it to NO choke, depending on how it responds to throttle, but I'm usually running in the 4k range by then going down the road. If you have to negotiate a lot of stop and go traffic very soon after you leave home, you may want/need to keep the partial choke on longer!?

Well let it warm up good today while taking the Roadstar out for a couple of blocks to get the cobwebs off after winter storage. Parked the Roadie and hopped on the XS and rode it around for a couple of miles (she runs sweet) . But after the ride on the big bike the XS felt like a tall 250cc (handling wise) but with a lot of power. Guess i can wait around during the cold weather for the warm up , guess it would be a good time to check the bike out while it`s warming up.

I always start on full choke. When it hits 2k, I go down to 1/2. When it hits 2k the second time, I take it off all together.

i warm it xsively, as i take the time to go over pre ride safety of lights and such, a good once over and i get into the riding zone mindset ,

and take the oportunity to try to flush crap outa my head, and concentrate on riding, los angeles is very conjested and that little shift in my focus, helps me concentrate on the issue at hand and that is to ride defensively ands aware,

hey i'm not 30 anymore and when i crashed on my bicycle last fall at 25 mph, it took me way too long to loose the pain, my xs goes way faster.
