I just bought a 82 XJ 1100. and trying to get it running. the problem i am having is that it wont start with the start butteon but if you cross the suliniod it will start. i checked the starter button and it has power when pushed. the kickstand switch isnt there. but i figured thqat only worked when it wa put in gear and the kickstand was down. any ideas. email me at kevinsudd@westelcom.com

Has the engine kill switch on or shorted. It could also be the angle kill switch under the gas tank.

They XJ also has a clutch switch, must be pulled in to start. Also I am guessing but the kill switch may be bad or corroded inside? Could be a bad seloniod if it does not pick up?

Anyway in the tips section we have just the info you need:

Look at the link I sent! The bike must have the clutch pulled in, and either be in nuetral or have the side stand up, so if your side stand switch is gone than you must have it in nuetral, if it still does not work. So I would look at the nuetral saftey switch next.

            Form tip:

The switch labeled “Starting circuit cut-off switch” is the clutch switch. If the bike is in neutral, and everything else is good, then the neutral switch is suspect. If the bike is not in neutral and the clutch lever is pulled in and the bike still doesn’t crank, the clutch switch is suspect. If neither of those is bad, the 'Safety relay' itself is suspect. Check for continuity in all these circuits to isolate the problem.

and here is the diagram for the XJ:

It would, if the L/Y wire is open (not at ground).

so i could bypass all the switches just to see if the starter relay is good. when i turn the key on and push the starter button the lights dim. which means it good. right

Side stand switch is no longer available from Yamaha. Best to jump around it.

Remove the seat. Follow the side stand switch wiring up to a connectorjust behind the gas tank. (I didn't have to remove the tank, had just enough room to work with the connector.)

Unplug the wiring to the side stand switch. It is a 3-conductor unit. Now what you need to do is jump all 3 connectors on the bike side together. I did this by making up a 3-cornered "Y" connector with 1/4 inch female terminals. Slide on connecor over each pin. Thats it.

My switch would work intermittently. I checked continuity when it was working and all 3 wires are connected to each other when the side stand is up. Jumping the wires at the connector makes the circuit think the side stand is always up. Would be *very* surprised if the side stand relay was defective.

Clutch switch is in the clutch lever assembly. If bad, remove the wires (2) and wrap their ends together. This makes the circuit look like the clutch is always pulled in.

Neutral switch could be your problem. These were the same as used on XS models and should be available. Same with starter relay. Of the two, neutral switch failure is more common, although a failure of either is not real common on these bikes.

Biggest source of electrical problems is in the fuse block. The 'fingers' that hold the fuses corrode, either making very poor contact with the fuses or breaking off completely if touched. A few techniques for replacing the block can be found in the Tech Tips, but for the short run you may want to jumper around the fuses. Be careful...a short can melt things in a hurry! Don't be surprised if some of the fuse fingers break off. Howqever, the fuse block will cause a lot of problems and should be updated before you start trying to track down other electrical gremlins.

ok i tied together the neuteral wires inside the headlight housing unit and made a 3 way connection to the kickstand switch. now when i looked under the tank there theree is a place for 2 identical switches and only one is there. left one is missing and the starter relay by the fuse box had a hole in it. so i ordered bothe the relay and the switch. could there be anything else i could be missing to get this to start

thanx all for your help on bypassing the nuterl and clutch swith. it was the starte cut off relay switch. now that it turns over it doesnt like to stay started . the spark seems week on the 2 left cylinders. could it not be sparking under pressure. anyway to check the coils

                          AFAIK coils are:
One for cyls 1&4 and one for 2 and 3.
You might want to change the plugs. Come to think of it. I think I'll do that myself.
