I am trying to install another harness and the wires (orange, gray etc) will not reach the coils. I did remove the coils before starting and fear that I might have put them in backwards. Do the spark wires exit the coil towards the fork or towards the battery? Thanks...Bob

I am not sure I was clear in my question. If the spark plug wires exit towards the battery, then the leads from the ignitor unit (orange, gray, red/white) come up about six inches too short. I don,t know where I am going wrong. I have pulled the wires completely from the harness and inspected them. It doesn't seem that they have been shortened or motified...Bob

If you have stock coils the spark plug wires face towards the battery. I now have several xs1100's 78, 79 & 80 models both standards and specials all coil spark plug wires come out of the end of the coil facing the battery.
You said your trying to install another harness. Is this harness the right one for your bike? Do you have the harness routed properly? Looking at your profile you say you have a 1978 xs1100f. If you have a 1978 xs1100 it is an "E", the "F" is a 1979 Standard model, but I think that either year model wire harness will interchange with either bike.
If you go to the Repairs section, Battery and electrical and select the dyna coil upgrade there is some pics that will show you how the wiring harness is routed, maybe it will help you with the problem.

First, thank you for all your help. The harness may not exactly be the one for my bike but the original was so badly modified it is impossible to tell. I have several wiring diagrams so I will try to make my own harness. The original did not have a fuse box but the second has one in perfect shape. By the time I finish I will be able to write a book. "Everything You need to Know About Wiring" or "How to Lose Your Mind". Fortunately I have another bike (Vulcan 1500) so I am not without a ride. I live between Mobile and Pensacola and the weather is warming...Bob
