Hi, I have a set of two Samsonite bags that I am trying to mount on my 79 Special... anyone have any mounting instructions and /or pics? I could also use a few spare parts (I need the quick release bolts and the trunk at least!)... or a website I could peruse? TIA, tim walters jazzrat2000

They're Gorilla tough!!!
I have a set for my 80SG. Here are 2 pictures with the bags mounted. Doubt I'll keep them mounted on the bike all the time. I'm hoping to devise some sort of quick release mechanism for the brackets so they can be removed/installed easily. Gotta do something with the tail lights, too.
As far as parts, I can't imagine where to get any. The ones I have use a barrell key which I dont have. Was going to try to get them re-keyed. If you find something threaded the same as the cylinder, then you can possibly get it machined to work. See this thread (http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...ight=samsonite) for some other insights into them as well.80 XS1100SG

That would be great!! Definately worth a shot. I'll PM you with my address. Much appreciated!!
jazzrat: The trunk doesn't have the triangular extrusion on the side that mounts it into the frames like on the side cases. Just flat sides. It bolts permanently to the luggage rack. A little annoying, really. The side cases are so big they'd hold just about everything you can imagine. You could almost carry a spare engine in them! It would be nice to have an easy way to take the trunk off when you don't need it.80 XS1100SG

barrel keys?
JWSanders, did you ever get keys? I have a locksmith here who made me some... but they are copies of the one I have, I don't know if he could make one without an original to copy...Dr. Tim Walters

No, sure didn't. Didn't really put a lot of effort into it though. Okay, well, I put no effort into it.
I've pretty much decided I will be using the frames with some of the nicer, more modern looking hardbags that can be had on Ebay pretty reasonably. The frames will provide a great mounting point for them. I hope to make them quick-detachable, as well.

PS... I am going to get some Yamaha OEM fiberglass saddlebags altered so they can be attached to the Samsonite mountings... that way when I am not traveling it won't look like I have suitcases on my bike... not sure how the alterations will work yet, but I have a fiberglass guy thinking about it...Dr. Tim Walters

ace keys
Those barrel keys are called Ace keys and they are not hard to make if you have the right equipment and know how to do it. Is there a code number stamped on the face of the lock where the key goes in? It could be a series of letters and numbers. If there is, pm me the numbers and I'll check our computer and see if it is still a valid code, or take the number to a local locksmith and have it done, if there isn't a code number they should be able to read the lock and make a key. Those setups usually use the same key for the whole set.Fastmover
