So, I finally got my first XS1100!

It's a 1981 XS1100 Midnight Special with only 5600 miles on it. I was able to get it for $1000. It has sat in a garage for about 8 years. So it is going to need a little work, which leads to the reason for this post.

What are the order of steps that I should take to get the bike up and running for the spring? I know that I'm going to need some new tires, oil change, new battery, change/flush the brake fluid. But I guess I'm wondering what I should do about the carbs, brake lines, exhaust, etc...?

Are there any common problems with the XS1100's sitting for a long period of time?

I'm also wondering what book I should get for accurate detail of parts; i.e. Clymers, etc...?

Thanks ahead of time for anyones help on this topic.

Good find there, balance. Your first stop should be this link from the Miscellaneous section right here on the forum. It will get you started on everything you've asked here, and on a lot of stuff you don't know you need to know about yet. If you've got some spare time, browse through the various technical sections and you'll find a wealth of information. Try out the search button at the top of the page too, it actually works pretty good.
