  • Dial Steering Damper Function

does anyone know how the old dial type steeering damper works?

does it tighten the steering head bearing to create that extra friction and drag?

    or is it something else?

No..........it creates friction against itself and the dampener mount.

      Motoman,

I'm not sure that's entirely correct!? I had a '67 Yamaha 305 twin 2 stroker, and it had the "KNOB" directly on top of the steering head shaft/bearings. As I tightened it, the steering head would become stiffer and harder to turn, like overtightening your TT shaft nuts. There was NO other dampener shaft or lever like on modern bikes!

Mason, it wasn't very good, and IF you forgot to loosen it when slowing down into city traffic, you could easily loose control not being able to turn the bars quickly enough to maintain your balance under slow travelling speed, and you could drop it!

well how did you find out top cat?, well when i read what you say sometimes like doing wheelies and scraping hard parts, you sound like to have a license to race, any how i'll try not to thighten the steering bearings too tight.
