  • How do you test the charging rotor in place?

I think I "may" have found the charging system issue, the rotor looks like some insulation came off, what is the best way to tell if the rotor is dead?

And I see there are contact areas for the brushes, they are insulated from one another, are they connected and, what is the ohms resistance thru the rotor?

I get infinite ohms when probing the brush surfaces to each other

also, how to you keep the rotor from spinning to get the bolt loose?

    thanks

And is it feasable to rebuild/rewind this rotor?

The bolt on my rotor popped right out with an air impact wrench. I didn't have to secure the rotor itself.

Yup.. impact is the best way, but otherwise, you'll have to put it in gear and put a stick through the spokes of your back wheel. Don't let it roll so far forward before it catches the stick that it pushes off the side stand. Then you'll probably need a pulley puller to get the rotor off the crank.

The stator in the cover goes bad sometimes, but rarely does the actual rotor ever go bad. Contacta guy on here named Geezer. (Tony) He's one of the charging system Gurus on here. If your rotor actually rubbed the stator, that will kill a stator in a hurry. Good luck.

This guy rebuilds stators and charging coils (rotors) but lately I've heard that he's way slow. www.tpe-usa.com

Hey Geezer... if the stator has been rubbed, he can't rebuild them. I don't know if that's the case though. One from Andreas will probably be the cheapest route.

Posthuman.. just get with Geezer and check your whole system out. He can pinpoint the problem that way. If it's your Regulator/ Rectifier.... he's your man for a new one!

We're talking XJ right? Odds are if it didn't come loose, then it didn't rub and it can still be rebuilt. It takes a lot of damage before they cannot be rebuilt.
