I think I used a three carb in 1 successfully but it required a lot of changing. Eg linkage shaft changes.

Can't change 2 and four though as four doesn't have the advance nipple. (*79,79 model )

Apart from linkages everything else worked perfectly.

I did it because I had two sets of carbs and 1 had a broken float post on both sets. Made one good set from two.

Stripped them both back to bare bodies to check though.

I ham-handedly broke several float posts on 2 separate sets of carbs. When the carnage was over, I ended up replacing the #4 with a #2, just put a cap on the vacuum line that comes out of the top. I also have 2 #3 carbs running on the set. (80SG)

AFAIK, odd numbers are interchangeable, as well as evens, but you can't mix and match since the fuel interconnects are on the insides on each pair. I looked into the possibility of drilling them, but wasn't sure if the inner passages are the same, and didn't want to ruin any other bodies to find out.

I had them completely disassembled, which made getting the linkages right a little easier (if that can be called easy!). You have to use the #1's butterfly parts since the #3 isn't adjustable.

      Seems to work just fine.

Since then, there has been several posts about repairing the broken float posts. One of these days I may try it. I still have the bodies all in a box, lamenting their fate....

      Damn these ham hands!!
