My question is simple. What are the advanages of having breather pods vs. breather box? I currently have pods but they keep falling off. I bought the stock breather box online but not sure I want to use it. Can someone help?

I had pods on my Honda. (Uni filters, I beleive) They were great except that they too, kept falling off. Every time I put them on, I tightened them a little more than the last time. They fell off sooner.
Moral of the story: Don't over-tighten the screw on the muffler clamp thing. Just tighten it to enough to make it snug without freely rotating. It'll be plenty tight.
May seem counterintuitive, but it worked for me. (Discovered this after losing one on the freeway and had to finish the trip (500+ miles) with pantyhose zip-tied on the carb.) If you want to keep the pods, try this before you try going back to the stock airbox.-Do what makes you happy.

Pros and cons?
Stock airbox -
Pro -
1 quieter running
2 won't fall off
3 perfect match for stock jets and exhaust
4 filters still available.
Con -
1 bitch to remove/reinstall
2 mice like to nest in it
3 poor match for jet and exhaust mods.
Cone filters -
Pro -
1 Easy carb on/off
2 good for jet and exhaust mods
3 louder, makes bike sound like it's going faster than it really is
4 use the extra room to heat up your lunch on a long trip.
Con -
1 uh? they fall off?
2 need to reroute vent hoses
Just my $.02

The stock breather box I bought did not have the rubber tubes that connect the box to the carbs. Are these available or am I going to have trouble finding them?68 Honda Cl350 (sold)

Not quite sure what you mean about falling off. When I bought the cheapo pods that didn't really fit my bike (Covered up some carb jets, but fit the carb bell outside diameter) and the filters were just kind of held in place with a rubber notch in the boot. The boot would stay in place, but the filter part would sometimes come off on a bump.
When I bought the K&N style (About 20 bucks more) they are all one piece molded together... boot to filter. These have never even TRIED to come off.
With the XJ's having even less room to move around the airbox to finesse the carbs out than the XS does...you couldn't pay me to put the box back in.

mine are uni pods and with the copius amounts of oil applied, the mounting rubber is "greased up" as well, i did notice the pod would skirm loose if tighten just a little too much past the sweet spot, within that spot the pod is secure.
my limited experience is that if you live in a dusty or park the bike in a dusty area i can't help but think the oil on the filters will attract stuff that would otherwise not be a problem with the stock air box, while the bike is not running, but it sure looks nice though."a good man knows his limitations" dirty harry

I have lost both outside pods on 2 different times. The left side fell off while on a ride to chi-town. while the right fell off just riding into town. luckily the 2nd time my jeans caught it until I got to wal-mart. I think I have uni-pods. are the k&n a better filter for the money? Here is a pic of my bike as it stands now!

Those would be uni's
I too have the uni-pods on my eleven, had the stock airbox through the first 3 carb cleanings, said this is enough after the 3rd.
I have not had any problems with mine wanting to fall off, but then maybe im getting them in that "sweet spot"
To me, they have proven invalueable, as well as given a substantial boost in how the bike runs overall (with the necessary jet changes of course)
Id recommend staying with them, the airbox is a hassel.
But thats just my opinion.Bauer

hmm... that is really wierd that they just fall off. I am on my second set (sold the first). Now I have the nice chrome caped Uni's (pk-82's I believe) and have never had any even seem like they wanted to come off.
If you have the stock box you could do like I did with the first set and get some 57mm uni pods and mount them on the old rubber air box boots. My bike really seemed to rip when I had that setup. Could the problem be that i don't have a side panel on either side? I see from the photo that your panels cover the back of the pods. It seems that my pants leg get caught and pull them off.68 Honda Cl350 (sold)

Could be... the uni's I have now are very short and not as large, so I don't contact them very much. With the setup in the photos (57mm pods) I actually did some trimming to the side covers to allow extra room for the pods.'81 XS1100 SH
