  • Just Bought Bike

I just got my 79 XS11Special one week ago. Its a pretty nice bike except the the brake calipers are all stuck and the tach doesnt work. I bought it from the original owner. Back in the day I had bought a new Z1R and my buddy bought a new 79 XS11 Special. He kinda drinks to much and crashed it then sold it and never rode again, good thing probably. I remember when both the bikes were stock he could pull me a little through the gears. Then I got a Denco header for my bike and he got a Kerker for his then I could pull him through the gears. The only thing I could figure is that the Z1Rs stock exhaust must have been worse than the XS11s stock exhaust and or the Denco header made more power than the Kerker. Anyway I will be glad to get this bike on the road as Ive never riden one!

Welcome and good luck. The calipers on the special are easy. Disassemble them and clean the square oring grove. Unless its really messed up you should be able to re use it. Make sure the sponge hole in the front master cylinder is clear, search sponge hole, change the fluid, bleed and you should be all set to ride. On the tach try cleaning all of the wire contacts. Also check that the charging system is putting out as that’s were the tach signal comes from on these beasts. Have fun

I agree with wingnut on the charging system. Usually these wire connections corrode at some point along their 25+ year lifespan. Make sure you check the fuses also. These glass fuses are a weak point in many's opinion. Most people eventually swap things over to be able to use the buss fuses like most vehicles use these days. You might check with TC on here and see if he has any fuse boxes available still if this interests you at all. Here's a link in the tech tips for that procedure.

Here is a link to the tech tips on the left side for your SPOOGE hole... it gets plugged with crud from old brake fluid and fine particles from the old rubber brake lines.

If you look around in those tech tips, there's alot of info in there to help you, as well as pictures on most things.

      Good luck.

There's also a tech tip on how to post pictures on here... we all love to see pics of people's bikes! *Hint hint
