Adding an oil cooler to my 1100

See thats what I`m afraid of. I sure dont want to rob oil presure just to cool the oil, that wouldnt make sense. I looked at the adapter plate on ebay and think thats the best way to go. I cant see from the pictures-are there holes to put hoses on?
I took an extra air box I had apart, pulled the rubber boots out, took them and ground the barbs off smooth. Now I`m going to clamp them back onto the carbs. I like not having an air box because thats were most of the noise comes from. I never use 2nd or 4th gear,just 1st 3rd 5th, giver hell untill the carbs quiet down. It sounds neet, maybe its just me but I`ve had HD riders tell me it sounds good.Not that it matters much.
Anyways it ran good up untill a year ago when I had my wife with me on a run. For about 7-8 miles we ran at 95mph. Now it runs good at 70 but if I slow to 55 it will backfire loudly once or twice. And crusing at anything under 70 it feels like I loose a cyl, but if I crack the throttle it comes back but eventually it misses again. A friend tells me its because I dont have an airbox and my latest modification is going to make it worse. It ran good untill that run. I think having Karla on it was worse than a hun burnouts, dont tell her that tho.

Yes, there are (supposed to be) two threaded holes in the side. It looks the same as the Lockhart I have on my E.

Oil Cooler adapter

Look up at the threaded hole that the oil filter bolt threads into. Is there a 32 mm hex head with threads inside of it, or do you see only aluminum? If you do have an adapter plate, there will be that large hex there. That is what holds the plate to the case. The oil filter bolt will thread inside this adapter bolt with the larger hex. OEM plates will have the hose fittings attached with allen head fasteners. OEM coolers use steel fitting built right into the hoses leading to the cooler. The aftermarket adapter will have threaded holes where the pipe fittings thread into. I have had both types on my bikes over the years. I currently have a Lockhart cooler on both Specials.

My 1980 xs 11 G has an oil cooler as standard - of course it is an Australian model
I recently modded the machine and had new lines made with my original fittings
Doesn't seem to be any proplem with oil pressure but I imagine you may need to fill oil with more than specified ??

That looks like the OEM plate that came from a donor XS850SG. It had cooling fins. I can't see how the fittings attach... are they threaded into the plate, or are they held on with bolts?

I think it was from a stock 81H, the one that I got from that Machinist that gave his XS up for his Hayabusa! It had already been removed by him. Some PO before him had made a homemade cooler out of 10-15 feet of copper tubing rolled into several coils and soldered to the mounting plate, no actual radiator! I've got some photos of it on my Desktop machine, but I'm on my laptop now!

I gave it to PlainDick IIRC, but it had the hoses attached by bolts and a plate to the side, you can see the flat area on the LEFT as we are looking at it!

Here's the difference between an OEM cooler plate and an aftermarket plate (Lockhart):





The OEM (off an XS850) has the hoses attached with allen bolts and has tabs to keep it from rotating. The OEM also has a bypass valve in case the cooler gets clogged, it's not a temperature valve.
The Lockhart (propped by a soda can)has the barbed fittings and no valve, just a machined piece of aluminum.

Well I got out bid on the plate, I like the OEM one better anyways.I`m sure by spring I`ll find one. I might go back to the guy I sold the 1980 to and see if its on there. He might give it to me. Thanks guys, Youve been alot of help. Seeyalater.
