  • tank and tail

okay, it looks like i want 78-79 standard tank and tail/seat section for my cafe racer project, like pictured below. from what i can tell, both years are the same. is that correct? will these parts bolt right on my 80 mns?

    Danny,

From what I've read here that it's NOT a bolt on process, the seats don't easily swap from the early 78-79 era to the 80-81 models either direction. Also, that 78 seat requires the TCI to be mounted in that fender/seat hump at the rear, your 81 has the TCI in the front position of the fender with a recess in the seat to allow for it!

Also, the tanks for Standards and Specials are quite different. They will "FIT" the frame, but the petcocks and fuel supply systems are different, the fuel gauges/lights and sensors are different. You'll need to get a different set of gauges IF you want to use the fuel float/gauge system of the Standard, or you can swap out the fuel sensor from the MNS tank to the Std to just use the Red Light, but you can't put the Std float in the MNS tank, not enough room!

      bit o work

if you get both the seat and fender, you can relocate the tci to fender. (may need to splice in longer wires )
Then seat will be plug and play. (79 seat not dished out to allow tci under seat as on 80 seat)

i wish i was good at photoshop. i think i have deceided what i want to do. i will do an homage to the midnight special, just the way i think it should have been built, cafe racer style. this bike is the perfect basis for what i want since the fenders are painted and everything is blacked out. i will use the paint scheme below, but paint everything black (front fender, tank, side covers and rear seat cowling) and the part on the tank that is painted where the yamaha badge is on the bike below, i will paint that gold. then i will either keep the gold wheels or get another set and completely powder coat them gold to match. i will have midnight special painted on the side covers or tank in gold, so the bike will still be called the midnight special and keep the color scheme, just a reinterperated version. i will ditch the rear fender and put a small cateye tailight with plate mount, like below, mounted on the end of the rear cowling. I will also flatten the seat on the front half and have the rear half fo the seat follow the countour of the rear cowling and rise up to make it look like a solo tailsection, like the example below. i will also do black clubman bars, below, and lower the bike some to get the sportbike ergos that i like. does anyone offer some different rearsets for our bikes or maybe just metal pegs instead of the rubber ones? i love designing a new project! so what do you guys think of this plan?

Seat had issues. So after got bike running put stock seat, bars, muf mounts and controls back on. And it's all black now

why did you take off of the rearsets?

                    Not my style
yup, on my XS parts shelf.

Bike was set up for speed/racing.
As far as I know the controls I have are very hard to find that fit the XS11. Shifter can be set up either one down/4 up or reversed. (in pic I have it one up/4 down)

                    Not sure what there worth?

                    Making an offer??? PM me

i am VERY interested in those and will make an offer soon. the fiance will not let me buy parts for it yet. the rules have been set, work on and spend on one project at a time. i have to finish the gixxer first, which is about done. final fits, tweaking and tuning should be all she needs. my problem is i get distracted easily, like most guys i guess. i want my gixxer done, but i am all worked up over this bike right now. i need to focus so i can start playing. i just like to get everything lined up and planned out before i attack a project.

Know what you mean. I just happen to have an 80LG MNS too.
Been collecting parts for almost a year and just about ready to
                        start on it.

                              Hi Guys,

Those rearsets are made by "Raask"; Don't know where they are made, but they used to be available here.
