Tire load Rating

How is a tire load rating determined
Do you add the total weight of bike, driver and passenger then add the weight rating of both front and rear tires together and that will determine if your too heavy for those tires?
I really like the price of the Dunlops D404's (and cant afford Elite 2's at 180 bucks) but am scared of weight ratings I weigh 190 the SWMBO weighs 160 bike weighs approx 550 . I have looked all over the net and as others have posted these tires come stock on bigger and larger bikes . how can that be? tires underrated so they sell the more expensive ones?

Hey there Ljay,

Yes, you are right, you add the total capacity of both tires, and then the total weight of your load, bike, etc.!! See below examples, I listed the 16" tires for your special! I've put on a 110/90-19 sized front instead of the 100/90-19 which will give you some more weight capacity!

404 series
MM/100/90-19: 507 lbs
110/90-19: 584 lbs

130/90-16: 677 lbs
130/90-17: 694 lbs

190 + 160 = 350 + 550= 900 lbs + gas, riding gear,
stuff in bags, etc.!?

16" rear:677 + 507 = 1184 lbs allows 284 lbs for the extra stuff.

Elite II's
MM/100/90-19: 570 lbs
MT/130/90-16: 830 lbs
MT/130/90-17: 870 lbs

16" rear: 830 + 570 = 1400 lbs. This combo allows
500 lbs for the extra stuff!

That really does put my mind at ease as well as the pocket
book theres no way I'm packing all that extra weight.
I will go with the MM 110/90/19 larger tire on the front as you have done to boost my load capacity up to approx 360lbs
to allow for XStra Stuff.
One more question I guess going with the bigger front tire
how much will that throw off my speedo readings
10 15 mph? bigger tire= slower readings?

The indicated readings for a given speed is by ratios of the diameters:

Indicated speed at 60 mph = D1/D2 x original indicated spped at 60 mph.

Ljay, you're in luck!

The old Elite II front 100/90-19= 26.41" overall diameter;


D404=110/90-19= 26.56" overall diameter, not enough difference to worry about, IMHO!
