question about mufflers gotta have an answer

calling out the big dogs,
I read on an older post that a set of harley fatboy or sportster mufflers will fit on an 82 xj 1100.
so I make a trip to the local harley shop, they have a few sets, i am asked the question..... what year harley do you think you would need a set off of?
my answer was
any suggestion what year i may need and thanks in advance you guys have always had good advice

Tell them you have a 1990 rat sportster and you're trying to fix ti up on the cheap. Any later sportster mufflers will do. I have a set on my 80 Mongrel and they work great.

You will need to fab up some adapters as the HD mufflers fit on a larger diameter pipe.

i think 04's and up have a crossover tube coming out of it that may be a problem...

i thought about that too, but if you see an '04; the crossover comes out of the inlet at different spots, on the muffs unless you get two sets they won't be twins ( no pun) more fabrication..., we all have or have had crossovers, that said, i read the sportster muffs don't lose power in the rpm zone that the crossover enhances.
