  • Oil Ring @ spin on filter

    I've been helping out on a bike I don't know too well. I went through the old posts and didnt see what I was looking for but it definitely may be there (sorry if thats the case).

    We rebuilt the carbs on my brothers 80 1100 over t-giving and it ran like a champ. BUT we got a crazy leak at the large rubber oil ring on the spin off case cover, on the way to the oil filter. After it happened once we used some oil gasket material from the tube and then I saw it happen again from about a foot away with my head under the pipes. As soon as the bike fired up, small drops of oil appeared at the seam where the ring is, and then all of the sudden, it just started to creep out more and more like the poltergeist movie.

    Any leads on where to find this rubber ring? Is that the probable issue here? We are trying to get set for xmas project time. Thanks

    I believe you get a new o-ring if you purchase a fram filter element.

    I've also had some good luck with building a new o-ring. Go to a good industrial supply shop and buy an o-ring of the correct thickness, but of a larger diameter. Also pick up a small container of Loctite 404, a special cyanoacrylate adhesive made for gluing rubber. Cut the o-ring, lay it into the groove on the filter element cover, and nick it where the ends overlap. Cut it through, apply a dab of 404 to one cut end, and use the groove as a jig for assembling your new o-ring.

    Of course, you might get lucky and find an o-ring that is already the right diameter

      O-rings that come with the oil filter elements work well enough for me. If you have an oil cooler, the hose fitting have leaked on my bikes before. It can be hard to see, but they do leak occasionaly

        Mine is an older style from TC. It has no groove and the filter fits flush. No muss, no fuss. No leaks at the upper end either.

          Hey there TonyDa, go to your local NAPA and filter #4933 comes with new O-ring. I re-use mine a few times until it gets flat from being compressed. Consequently, I have several extra for who knows why...........

            I believe it's Fram filter CH6002. Comes with a new O ring. O ring has been sitting in the box twisted for years. Soak it in hot water fer a spell, and it will lay flat in the groove and not buckle and kink on ya.

            I always reuse the old O-ring, and keep the new ones around in case I need a really big rubber band.
