  • shifting situation

    i am having shifting problems
    the bike on the center stand will only go up one gear and down one gear
    the clutch works fine and my shifter is properly aligned. I pulled the trans pan, the shift cover and the clutch, now i can turn the rearr wheel and watch the gears but it seems like the forks are not moving the shift drum only rotates about a quarter of an inch when i try to shift. is it possible i have a bent fork?
    or is there something that can jam up the shift drum i turn the rear wheel and it gets to a point where the whole motor locks up. the engine runs great and there doesn't seem to be a problem there. can i take the shift shaft out with the motor in place and how about the
    drum? the bike doesn't want to go through all the gears. it seems like it is in gear already and catching a second gear.

    Hey Rick,

    Could be a bent shift fork, could be a worn shift drum...the channels that guide the shift forks, could also be the pins on the end of the shift drum that the Shift Pawl grabs to rotate the drum have broken/fallen out!? You said you check the alignment, but did you closely inspect the drum to verify that ALL of the dowels were in place?!

Yes, you can pull the drum, the countershaft and related gears without splitting the cases! Good Luck!

      all the pins and dowels are in place
      i think i'll have to pull out the shift shaft and the drum to check for any damage or binding
      i found a first gear tooth in the oil pan but nothing else. also the gear on th end of the shift shaft that engages the oil pump spins freely is that normal?
      how hard is it to put the forks back into place?
      the second fork points staight up when looked from beneath.

        The spinning gear that meshes with the oil pump is the idler gear that is driven by the clutch basket, and in turn is driving the oil pump.
