  • An oil draining trick

I got this idea from someone here on the site, so I can't take credit. I tired to explain it to someone with 4-1's a while back that was tring to figure out how to drain the oil without making a complete mess on the pipes. Just thought I'd put up a picture.

You have to loosen the exhaust a little to get some space in there, get the drain plug just ready to fall out, then put the hacked up soda bottle in there and finger the plug free.

Of course, 5 minutes later I pulled the filter housing and made a complete mess anyways. Good trick for just draining oil, though.

wow nice looking pipes. I can see why you want to keep stuff off of them. Just get some pipes like mine and you will not have to worry about stuff spilling on them!!!

        complete mess anyways.

        If pipes are not hot......
Wrap em in a piece of plastic wrap from the kitchen.
When done just pull off plastic.

I have installed a drain plug in my oil filter cup. I just pull plug and let it drain for a couple of minutes, and then loosen the filter cup bolt a turn or two, and let it finish draining out the drain hole. That makes removing the filter cup much neater. No oil pouring down the side of the cup.

Couple months ago had a plastic bag with oranges/limes in it wrapped in a jacket and attached with a bungee cord on back of seat. Going over the 580 grade looked back and bag had come out of the jacket and draped it's self on the exhaust. Was not pretty.

I have a cover that I put on when I go to school. I sewed some denim to keep the fabric off the header. Before I put it on, the fabric kept melting onto the header. Nasty stuff

getting plastic off of the pipes

You might try acetone on cold pipes to remove plastic. It won't work on all plastics, but I can tell you about melting my finger prints into the telephone in the garage!

                              Drain Plug

The drain plug was an easy mod. I just used a die grinder with a deburring tool to remove the cooling fin that is located directly behind the bolt hole in the filter cup. You could use a Dremmel if you have one. The cup is very thick here on the bottom, so you won't weaken anything by grinding on it. I used a 1/8 inch pipe tap, after drilling with the correct size drill bit. (You'll find the correct drill bit size stamped into the shank of the tap) I should have made it a 1/4 inch pipe size, but I didn't have a 1/4 pipe tap, so I settled for the smaller size. If you have a 4-1 exhaust then you could relocate the drain to the left side of the bottom of the cup. That may allow you to drain the cup without spilling any on the pipes. Once a few ounces have drained, loosen the oil filter bolt a turn or two, and the oil will drain faster. A little thread tape or pipe dope on the threads, and tighten the plug snugly to install it. It's a really easy job.
