I searched for it and found nothing. Does any one know how wide the rear rim is on a 79 XS 17". What I am really trying to figure out is how much wider a tire can be than the rim?
    Clues, hints, Ideas, Facts anyone?
    Gracias

The rim is 2.5" wide. you can just fit a 130/90 17" on the bike, if it is a blackwall WITHOUT raised white letters. The driveshaft tube gets in the way of anything wider.

      just do it

start your belt drive conversion. you will be able to put a 180 on with no problems. My 190 tire is gonna fit perfect with no major frame modification. Check out pggg's chain drive to get an idea. Nice work BTW...

I am gettin to it and when its done its gonna be bad a--. Nothing better than a little peer pressure.I ask because I am putting different rims on it. I have a 5.5" by 15" or 18" rear (I cant remember) and 2.25"by 21" front. I have the 80 spoked rims already and I am looking at tires. I want to put the fattest back tire on this rim that will work. I need it big cause I am gonna have to run the belt out side of the frame. Like Viper did his chain. I need the tires to get the measurement of how wide I need the swing arm to be.
So what is the consensus on tire width verse rim width?

          5.5

your 5.5 inch should take a 180 nicely. I looked at a buell rear wheel with a belt sprocket before I decided to do the single side swingarm with monoshock...also the middleshaft can be modified a number of ways for whatever your application....if you go ouside the frame with a belt, you could later put an Avon 300 on that thing....chop

            Hey Chop,
How wide is your rim for that 190 rear tire?

              six

6.0 NOT including the outer rim edge (6.75") I am getting the spacer made right now to bolt it to the frame with stock pivot bolts.

                Hold the PHONE,
I am sure you wrote it before and I missed it but your going Ducatti style on us with a drive shaft? That is some serious stuff.
Please tell me how thats gonna work? What I have read of your posts I thought you had a couple ideas in the works 1 was a softtail with under frame shocks, another was chain drive, you regeared w/a 750 rear, And I thought you were going monoshock side mount or center mount. When did you think up going single swing arm? thats gonna rock when you get that done. So what all have you done to your bike(s) as of now?

                      fix some design probs

Fixed the gas guzzling problem on the Blue Streak with the 750 FD that I looked into all summer. I have one last mod (wheels)I will do to her . If my machinist would get on the ball. I am now doing a frame up build with the triumph st setup and chain drive. will put a 1200 motor in it to finish it off. I think I have found a way to put the monoshock on this and keep the battery in same location, just TILTED, I don't know for sure if the GEL type batteries can be constantly tilted?

                        sadd

I had to put her away for the winter. Put another 200 miles on her before a big snow storm rolled thru last thursday. now just tinkering after work on the bare frame and swingarm.

Nice bike Chops, how much trouble was it to put that XJ fuel tank on the Standard frame? It looks good, I think TC will be interested in how the back of the tank is mounted to the frame.
Your seat looks custom made, did you do that also?

The only way I would custom fit a chain or belt drive, is if I had an extra bike to do it to, I just can't be without my ride for that long. I love my ride, I love to ride!

I believe we all love to ride, there for I have another not so fast motorcycle to ride when I get the urge and Frankenbike is in pieces. The Urges don't come so often when its winter though. I admit it, I am a fair weather rider. I have no shame.
