  • Help!! Carbs sticking!!

Hello,,I searched around the site for two hours trying ot see if anyone has posted my problem and didnt see it as of yet. I bought a 78 xs11E that sat up for 5 years in the elements. The carbs are sticking even after taking them apart and spraying the holy crap out of them. With the carbs sitting on the floor, It takes ALOT of pressure to open them up and you can see the butterflys SLOWLY close?? Driving me nuts dang it. I"ve owned four other XS"s but never had that problem, I like to tinker on bikes but I am no mechanic!! Does anyone know what could cause the throttle to take forever to close? Any suggestions would be really appreciated!!

When I first pulled my carbs off the bike (which sat for 7 years outside), you couldn't even move the butterflies. 6 cans of carb cleaner later, I had finally loosened them up enough to take the butterflies and their shafts out and give each carb body a good soak in a tank. They would still barely move. Was a hell of a job.

You don't want to soak the carbs without taking the butterfly shaft seals (and a few other rubber parts) out first. The tank can destroy them.

The oracle predicts: Much carb cleaning in your future.

Sorry, but yes, more carbcleaning sound like it is in order. Once they're clean a good stync'ing will be needed.

Take off the tops and remove the vacuum slide diaphrams first. Carb cleaner and gasoline sometimes makes them swell and then it's a pleasure to try to get them to fit back into their grooves.

Thanks for the info, I asked my cousin to give them a real good cleaning for me, He has more experience than me on motorcycle carbs, Now when I get my tank in I will see if the beast will come alive!!
