  • Final Drive Swap Question

I am in the process of cleaning and filling in the lube holes on the XS750 gear coupling. I can't wait to try this mod out. I am doing it for the better gas mileage on my 79 touring standard.

Anyway, are the XS750 and XS1100 final drive housings the same size? Can you just use the XS1100 gear coupling on the XS750 final drive? You guys probably answered this already, but was just wondering. Thanks, Papanovember.

I think the answer is NO. If you re-read the entire series of posts someone asked that question if my memory is correct?

      no

no,the pinion splines don't match. the best way is to extend the xs11 shaft with a 5/8 coupler like maximan posted. Or you could spend $500 bucks for a custom xs11 shaft....

No no $500 is the cost to have the shaft heated...cut..sleeved and pinned then re-welded on the ends of the sleeve. Finally they recommended having it shot-peened. This mod would be about $500-600.

I asked what a "custom" manufactered shaft would cost ...the machinist at R-K machine shop shook his head...so I guessed out loud "$1200"...he replied "In your dreams..."

Machine shop work is very expensive. Recently we had some brass bushing made for an field engine. The OEM bushings were made of nylon. We were getting really poor service so the Boss took a new nylon to several machine shops. Bear in mind this bushing is about as big as a 50 cent piece and maybe 3/4 inch long. It cost $1200 to have 6 made.

Of course it solved our problem and saved us thousands X 5 in the long run.

Chop's spacer idea is the ticket and it doesn't compromise the integrity of the shaft.

Maximan, send me the blueprint for those 6 bushings I want to bid on the next batch. In Saginaw there are a tons of machine shops all catering to the auto industry.

Glad to get 'em somewhere else and stick the savings in my pocket.

There are no "blue prints". I took a nylon bushing to a machinist and told him I wanted a few more just like it ... but brass. He just copied it...in brass.

But while we're on the subject...it would be interesting to know what a custom drive shaft would cost. Just like the OEM 1100 shaft only 11/16 longer.
