      hi douglas,
those carbs look the same as mine
      mines an 81 model,
my main jets standard are all 110
and my pilot jets are 40,
if you have mods, such as exhaust system
pod filters etc u can up the size of the jets
accordingly, theres another thread with jetting
modifications if u have modified parts fitted.

The carb bodies are 80, at least the float bowls are. The top caps are 78-79. Don't know how things are down under, but all the carbs I've seen had 42.5 pilots (except for mods). I've never seen a throttle cable holder like that one. Not that it shouldn't work.

          second photo,
center right philip screw holds in float needle seat,
will find when removed, a delicate filter on back side of seat and an "O" ring. Should have rubber tipped needles too.

if you have stock air box/exhaust, should only need basic kit which will come with gasket, needle, seat and O-ring.

            Thanks guys.

MRO, I hadn't pulled the seat because someone had mentioned I didn't need to. I will pull them tonight. Needles are not rubber tipped. Stock airbox, K&N filter. Kerker 4-2 exhaust. Sounds like it is missing some of the baffles. Thanks. My pilot jets that should be 42.5 look good but the part where you unscrew them are scratched from PO's screwdriver. Which kit should I order? 80 or 81? Ironically it ran fairly well, it had its spots and was running better the more I rode it. It would flood when sitting but got good gas mileage. Thanks again for everyones help.

                    Hey Doug,

PartsNMore sells the same kit for $12.00 ea, that carbkits web site sells them for $14.95 ea.

Now that you have the bottoms off, you need to pull of the top, the slide diaphragm and set it aside, and then push the main jet NEEDLE=emulsion tube up thru the body of the carb, so that you can ensure that all of the little holes are clear, soak the Jet tube in carb cleaner, or spray and clean with cleaner and toothbrush.

That throttle cable holder should have a large round recess portion where that slot is to hold the end of the cable sleeve in position, I can't tell from this picture whether it's there, or has gotten broken off, or is upside down??

See that long thin tube in the bottom of the carb body, it goes to the jet in the float bowl, make sure that tube is clear, and also the tunnel and jet in the float bowl.

Now, the fuel "T" inbetween each carb needs to be inspected and cleaned out, corrosion and gunk easily builds up in there. To get it out, you will need to remove one carb from each end of the bank. Look at the throttle plate linkage where they go together, fiddle with it, there is a spring and plate that sandwiches the end of the next carbs throttle plate "tang" and you should be able to figure out how it slides in and out, so it will be very easy to put back into place when you are ready to put the carb back on the rack! Be careful handling the "T", the outside is coated with rubber to make a seal, but IF it crumbles apart as you remove them, then you needed to replace them anyways. Don't soak them in cleaner, but you can spray thru them with cleaner, and use a piece of wire, small screwdriver, etc. to scrape away the corrosion from inside the "T"!

BTW, the float needles NOT being rubber tipped is why they leaked, the replacement ones will be VITON tipped and will properly seal when pushed into position! The small screen filter on the underside of the seat just pops on and off.

You're going great, keep at it!

Well, after a break I got back to this. I have a few questions. My new seats do not have screens. Do I reuse the old or don't worry about it? I was told I don't need the plugs, is that true? I need a washer for one of the main jets. PO had used a steel washer that is dished and doesn't look good. I need to fix the ball mechanism for the choke. Non existant. Does the air pilot jet get seated completely? I think that's all I can think of at the moment. Thanks for your help.

                          Hey Doug,

Yes, just clean the screens on your old seats, they pop off, and put them onto the new seats. Right, no pilot jet tower plugs! And the Pilot "JET" that screws down into the pilot jet tower does get fully seated, just be gentle, a gentle snugging is all or you could break the brass slotted tips! That main jet washer is available from MikesXS, but you might be able to get it from your Dealer quicker/cheaper. I don't know the exact thickness, but you could remove one of your other ones and match it, to find a brass one!?

Thanks guys. I have them back together. Not as much cleaning as I expected. I did see some holes plugged in the air pilot jets. Carb cleaner cleaned up all of it. Oh yeah, the screens had a little gunk on them. Just have to adjust floats and synch carbs. I'm taking a break! Have a good New year everyone.
