i tried to remove the air pilot jet like the manual said, and of course I stripped the crap out of the slotted front. the hole is still fine, but I don't know if I should try to drill it out and re tap or pound a slotted screwdriver into it to remove it, or if I could get away with just leaving it alone.

That pilot air jet is like a size #180. That's rather large.
If I could squirt some carb cleaner into that jet, and the juice comes out the pilot jet in the bowl area and out the pilot needle area, etc, I wouldn't worry my pretty little head over it. (I don't know just what kind of head you have, but you shouldn't worry about it, either.)"Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor, not a mechanic!' ('Bones' McCoy)

well, when the book says it should come out, I try to take it out. I don't know enough about carburators yet to know what absolutely has to come off and what doesn't. But carb #1 came out pretty clean, and I've got 3 more to practice on.
I just have to get new screws for the bottom rail. the original phillips didn't hold up very well. anyway, thanks

Is there somewhere to get a set ofreplacement screws for these? I'm about to do the rbuild on my carbs and I'd much rather have the screws here before I start.1979 XS1100 SF

Just take the original screws to any good hardware store. They are a fairly common size. I recommend allen heads screws, as a hex head may be too big for a socket to clear the bowl when removing the bolts. Allen heads work fine for me. Possibly pick up a 1/4" drive 4mm hex driver while you are there. That will make screw removal a snap.
