  • lost 2 cylinders

    Something very bad happen on way home from work today. the xs lost 2 cylinders. no warning what so ever.14 miles from home and traffic backed up . up to that point the xs had been running EXcessively great. didn't have to even use the choke to start her. did make it home. on inspection i found i had no spark on #2&3 cyls.thought broken pickup wires. checked them out found them to be ok. maybe bad coil, they checked out ok to. pulled off seat to look at black box. no broken wires. did have extra box,didn't know if it was good.swapped out boxes eureka. now the xs is back to running EXcessively sweet again. black box took the big dump. no warning at all. bike had been running perfect. not even so much as a hiccup. is that common place or should i do some more digging. i know randy fixes them will pm him to find out.

    graybird78;

    Probably the solder joints inside the box corroded. You can fix it right on the bike, take a look here:

      re: tci box

      Randy - thnx for the reply. appreciated. already know that it's the tci box at fault. replaced with a used unit and bike started and ran fine. put old unit back on. started bike. ran bad. missing on 2 and 3 cylinder. put used box back on and ran fine - good spark on 2 and 3. took cover off tci box - didn't see any obvious broken solder joints or burn marks indicating that curcuit had failed. couldn't get curcuit board out of box so put it back together. sometime later would like to send box to u to have u chk it out as they are very hard to find around here. was wondering if this is a common problem on these bikes or if i should be looking for something else that could cause the failure? this box has apprx 37k on it. let me know if we can work something out to get this box to u to chk out.

      thanks again,

        You don't have to remove the board to do the solder fix, just take off the cover!

        And you won't see an obvious problem, like burn marks, etc. These boxes are very robust EXCEPT for those solder joints. re-solder them and I think you'll be surprised!
