Do I really need a carb kit? Can I strip clean and re-assemble and just replace anything I find busted and leave it at that?

You sure can, I prefer that method. First thing I bought was a kit and now I have extra parts. When you do the repairs you probably might as well go ahead and get 4 float bowl gaskets, thay tend to tear when opening bowl. depending on how long its been since it was opened last. From what I hear stay away from K&L parts. MikesXS.com has alot of good parts for our carbs."Beware of any man that owns a pig farm"

I have never found a nead for an actual kit yet. none of my 4 sets of carbs have needed float bowl gaskets. For me, they just stick to one side. I suggest just taking the jets and everything else out, cleaning them, and reinstalling. After I clean them, I run marvel mystery oil or some other cleaning substance through the gas for a tank or two. As long as you are careful and don't break anything, most likely, you won't need a kit.United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY
