I'm just making sure before I go and make a huge mistake.

I am finally (now the parts are here) going to change my cam chain and re-assemble the head.
I need to clean the piston crowns and was going to use a brush attachment on a drill - this will require turning over the engine. I want to be sure that with the head off I can do what I want as long as I have the "T" mark lined up before re-assembling??!

Incidentally for those that remember - this is the head that the spark plug snapped off in. The machinist guy had a helluva job getting it out and told me that I stood no chance at all with conventional tools. Now though - lovely clean and fully heli-coiled head C$200.

Hoping to get this done and a few more miles in before the weather gets too ****ty - it is Canada after all.

double check with the manual, but I believe you are correct. Line up the "T", and then the marks on the cam sprokets.
Remember, the slack should be to the FRONT of the engine.

      Hey SiP,

Yes, with the head totally off, you can spin the crank to your hearts content, as long as the cam chain is very loose so that it doesn't get grabbed by the crank sprocket and pulled down or doubled over and kinked/binded!

Only remove the carbon from the TOP of the pistons, don't mess with the side, but if you're not taking the jugs off, then you shouldn't be able to get to the sides to affect them.

The pistons are aluminum, so take it gently. Others have used chemical techniques, like a rag soaking in vinegar layed ontop of the piston for a few minutes....said it disolved it very well. Or might try other stuff like carb cleaner, etc.. Probably find more info doing a search here in the FORUM!

I used a brush/drill attachment with no problems. Just do a little bit first to make sure you are not scoring the piston. Some brushes are more coarse than others depending on the material the brush is made of.
