79 Special, where to start

I just drove 1200 miles for a 79 Special, that needs work. Engine smokes and leaks, drive shaft leaks and parts are missing. I plan on taking the winter to overhaul and return to original condition or slightly improved. Anything to give extra consideration in the process? Thanks in advance.
