  • missed downshifts

Frequently when I go to downshift (from any gear) there is nothing there. Feels like downshifting from first. Nothing. Then, on the next try or two it catches the next gear down. Pretty frustrating and seems to be getting more frequent. Was told it was me, but I don't think so. Need advise from you guys.
Hope this is an easy one!

Mine does it A LOT!. I think the shift spring that returns the lever is a little weak.

My technique is to lightly tap the shift lever down once or twice then the shift will go as normal.

I'm not really sure why it is doing this. But I'm going to replce second gearin a couple months. At that time we'll see what may be causing this malady.

      Shiftless Characters!

      Hey Dean and Cody,

It IS the return spring for the shift lever, when it gets weak, after you downshift it doesn't FULLY return the shift lever up to RESET the ratchet mechanism of the shift pawl to be ready to grab the next pin on the drum. Instead of tapping down on the shifter, just use the edge of your shoe/boot to gently lift up on the shifter, not enough to shift back up a gear, just enough to return the shifter to the proper position, and then you'll be able to downshift to the next gear. The Spring is still available, around $10.00 or so.

Cody, I also tap down once or twice but what a pain. Looks like we have an answer! Thanks TC. Is this spring accessible or is it transmission work?

Drain your oil first lax, unless you don't care if all your oil runs on frame and pipes.........Other than that, self explanatory.
