  • exhaust pipes

I have an 80 SG (I suppose, as it says "XS1100 Special" on the side covers) and want to replace the 4-in-1 with OEM 78 E pipes. Will they fit? Or, if they require some adaptation, etc., would anyone recommend that route?

    Thanks!

    Standard pipes on a special

I just checked into puttung some aftermarket pipes from a 78 standard onto my 80 special. NO GO! The angle of the standard mufflers is basicly parallel to the ground, and the special mufflers have an upward angle. Second, the mounting tab on the mufflers will not line up with the aluminum bracket that the rear foot pegs attach to. No problem, I thought, I'll just swap out the foot peg bracket. Wrong! the dimension from the foward bolt hole where the front peg mounts to the hole for the rear brake lever is 4.5 inches on the standard, but is 5 inches on the special. The angle of the bracket on the standard is also parallel to the ground, and the special's is angled like the mufflers. I could make an adaptor but the mismatced angles of the muffler and the foot peg bracket may not look very good. I'm still debating this swap please let me know if you have any luck with this swap.

I put some 81H pipes on a 78 (ran a bolt through the foot peg bracket near the rear foot peg), but you want to go the other way around. With the special's lower rear-end, running the horizontal pipes might give you some clearance problems in turns -- especially if you have a passenger or you are a big guy. There is another thing that might give you problems. I believe there is a difference in the flange depth between specials and standards (not sure). I am talking about the distance between the crush gaskets and the exhaust head bolt flanges. Maybe it is just a thing with Jardine 4-to-1's, but they do supply different length adapters or the crush gasket areas for the special vs the standard. Someone should comment on this if they know...

        pipe swap

Skids, You are right about the conering clearance. I tend to wear the center of my tire more than the sides though, so I'm not too concerened with that, and I only weigh 190 lbs.... lol...
I have owned my 80SG since 91, bought it as a $500 'rat' and I gave it a good 'cherrying out" Kind of a "frame off" if you will, but didn't use new parts, everything was used. Put in about 150 hours on it. I had never worked on a Standard model before, and was unaware of the differences. I knew there were some, but not so many little ones, at least not till after I started comparing them side by side... Anyway back to the pipes. I am running a set of OEM Yamaha pipes from a Midnight Special. They look great too, but I've had to weld them a few times at the collector to muffler joint, under the heat shield. The repair works fine, and the pipes are solid. The only reason I was thinking about the swap is that the pipes on the 78E that I just bought were fairly new, and I though they would look good on my SG. I'm thinking about freshening up the 78E motor for use in my 80SG. Right now I'm running a motor from an 82 XJ1100. The pipes were just a passing fancy.... I plan on selling it off as parts here on XS11.com. That's the main reason I bought it in the first place. I have been selling XJ1100 parts for a while and had very good success. Thought I'd try my luck with an old XS.

Not quite on topic, but I fit a set of Jardine 4 into 2 from a standard onto my XJ. Ran into same problem with muffler brackets, different place, angle, yadayadayada. Shortened the headers by about 1.5 inches which brought the muffler bracket underneath the footpeg bracket. Dropped an extension from the footpeg bracket (about 3 inches bolt center to bolt center) to the muffler bracket and bolted on the mufflers. Had found a chromed bar (about 3/16 thick by 1/2 inche wide) at a scrap yard, so the extensions looks good on the bike. Have not had cornering problems with this set-up.

Had to 'notch' my engine guards to get the pipes to fit (headers run slightly closer to the engine than the XJ stockers) but otherwise they went on without any real problems.

            Need new Exhaust

I have done a search and read the messages about the Harley mufflers etc....I have a 81 XS1100SH full pacifico fairing and hard bags...my collectors have been welded to the stock mufflers by the PO. There are pin holes in the mufflers and collectors and since they have been welded in place I suppose I must replace the whole exhaust....my question is what brand etc....I want to retain the 4 into 2 stock look and length if possible. It is a pain to remove the back tire as it is with the hard bags, and thankfully the mufflers are short enough to be able to remove the axle bolt without hitting the mufflers....any ideas on what to buy? I have done some checking around at the MAC site and Jardine but couldn't tell if any of their exhausts were close to stock dimensions....I would like to have louder exhaust noise but it isn't as important as stock dimensions....HELP....any advice will be appreciated....

That internet link is to your hard drive, and while it may work perfectly for you while you are on your computer, it does nothing for me.

Ahh, that's better. Sharp looking bike. I always liked the lines of that model.
