AUTO ALT Alternative??
Hey Red,
What lights do you have on your trunk, boxes?? Are they the 4" round, or are they the oval shaped ones?? Superbrightleds.com has the 4" round kind for reasonable prices vs. what you can find at Walmart or such!!
As for the ALT mod, I, too, was thinking about this, and I thought we had a discussion about this a while back. One thing was a concern about the direction the ALT spins, since most are mounted so that they turn Clockwise. Mounting one using a bracket and pulleys would have it turning CCW to keep it mounted above and inside the outer edge of the OEM alt. IIRC, Randy had said that it didn't matter which way it spun, but the position/angle of the cooling fins on the pulley would NOT be spinning in the right direction to pull air into the unit??
Another thought was to like you said, GUT the OEM cover, perhaps even cut an opening in the end of it incase the replacement one was a bit wider, so that it could stick out the side. Find a way to fasten the pulley shaft directly to the crankshaft, there is a threaded hole that the ALT "flywheel" attaches with, perhaps being able to "make/Machine" an adapter that would thread onto the end of the auto ALT pulley shaft, and also thread into the XS11. crank shaft, then just make some attachments to secure the auto alt housing to the OEM housing, so that the auto would spin whenever the engine is running.
Also, the Auto ALts, have built in regulators, so would be just a matter of hooking up a nice fat 12+ lead to it and to the battery, and let it CHARGE!?!? Wouldn't need the XS11 Reg/Rect!
DOABLE?? ?
