  • Throttle cruise control problem

The Throttle on my XJ1100J has a H.E.P. cruise control on it. It sets between the throttle handle and the switch box. Control is loose and on a white plastic sticking out or the handle. The cruise when pushed up against the switch box does not clear the box. There is also a black thin (1/16") washer between the handle and the cruise. The washer has four square notches on the I.D. which meshes with the white plastic comming from the handle. I removed the handle and switch box but could not get the white plastic out from the handle. Oiled the cable and greased the inside of the handle and reassembled the throttle. XJ-CD does not have breakdown for the throttle handle to see what is supposed to be there. Looks as if there was some kind of spacer to cover the white plastic if there was no cruise control. Finally a question does anyone have clooseups of the throttle handle or has anyone have the cruise on there bikes? What spacer is missing?

Trying to get a grip, don't throttle me?

    Hey Dell,

Well, I have an el-cheapo Vista-Cruise type throttle lock, there is NO SPACER per sae, just the portion that grips the plastic throttle slide to relatively lock/secure it in place to hold the throttle.

The switch boxes are mounted onto the round portion of the handlebars. IF there is a gap between the throttle sleeve and the grips, then sounds like you may need to put on longer grips?

Here's what the throttle sleeve looks like:

Once you take the switch assembly apart, the throttle sleeve comes out from in between the switch housing. So...I'm having a little difficulty understanding "WHERE" The gap is or the problem you are having? The white plastic piece that is part of the throttle lock was probably slid up over the end of the throttle sleeve before the grip was put on!?

      Throttle cruise control problem

Tom Cat, I cannot get the plastic sleeve out of the grip, one. When I look down inside the grip the plastic runs all the way to the bottom and still sticks out about 1-1/4" past the grip ferrule. The end cap is held on by a screw from inside the grip. Your picture does not show the four teeth sticking out of the plastic. The teeth will not go inside the grip because they are bigger in diameter than the hole in the grip. How can I get a picture into the reply to you so I can take it, alter it and paste it? I have photo shop and can make it any size or resolution needed.

        Hey Dell,

Read this thread in the HOW TO FORUM to learn how to post photos.

The above photo does show that the end of the plastic sleeve does have thoses four tips, you just have to stretch the grip over the end of the sleeve. Yes, it's a very tight fit, takes a lot of work to fit new grips onto the sleeve, lots of pulling and such! But there are different sized/length grips, the PO may have put on slightly shorter ones?!

          Throttle cruise control problem

I was referring to the four lugs about one inch behind the cable flange, not he ones on the botom of the sleeve. I will try and take pix and send to you tomorrow.

            GOT pix of throttle

Tomcat the link 1) shows the gap, with the ctl pushed toward the handle, note that the cable lock is disengaged. I think that the ctl needs to be pushed against the switch however, the ctl does not clear on top so I Dremelled it to fit.
            1)

Link 2) shows the NEP Ctl from handle side to see overall.
            2)

link 3) the square, four of them, lugs that are to big in diameter to fit inside the handle.
            3) (I tried to outline the lug just above my finger nail). These lugs fit the thin washer that my finger nail is holding. I think that the washer really needs to be next to the handle and the ctl next to the switch which leaves a gap between them. If you have seen anything like this please let me know how it is supposed to fit. Maybe I will just remove the whole thing but then I would have even more gap to fill. Perhaps the PO removed whatever was there to install this Control.

link 4) is current progress in restoring my LASERMAX (paint is FORD E9, Laser red I call Candy Apple RED). Also note the wind shield is STILLETO BY PLEASY, can't find company and install instructions, If this looks farmillar let me know.
            4)

Again Tomcat many thanks for any help with this problem.

              Hey Dell, it's TOPCAT

              Dell,

              Yes, it looks very familiar:

Apologies for the out of focus on the next one, was in my dimly lit still too full garage since I haven't completely finished my SHED yet, to move the junk out, trying to get shots from the other side of the grip, etc.!!!

This next shot shows the portion that fits around the throttle cable on the bottom. See how SNUGLY mine fits next to the control switch box!

And here is the lock pulled apart, mine also has that thin flat washer next to the grip, the lock next to the switch box, but that's it, the GRIP is slid up far enough so that there aren't any of those notches/square prongs from the sleeve sticking out, but it looks more like your problem is the size of the switch box may be a bit larger, so the lock/clamp can't sit snugly against it??

So....it looks like you have it pretty much correct, just needs to be more snug against the switch box, and then the grip needs to be pushed up further onto the sleeve, or you may need to get a larger/longer grip that WILL slide up enough to cover the notches!

              Hope this helps?

PS....AHA, just looked at your switch box again, and your Starter Button switch sticks down so far that your section that is supposed to fit around the throttle cable CAN'T cause it's being stopped by that bigger box!! Perhaps you can dremmel OFF some of the throttle lock so that it will STILL grip the throttle cable to keep it from spinning, but remove enough to clear the Start switch box portion sticking down !?

TomCat I tried to slip the sleeve into the handle but the lugs are bigger than the I.D. of the handle. I suppose that I could machine the I.D. of the handle out to fit the O.D. of the lugs but could not get it off the sleeve and was afraid of breaking the white plastic sleeve. Maybe there is a simple way to remove the handle! Has anyone seen the windshield on my bike before?
