  • Cold Weather Starts

Is this a common problem? If it is what is the cure.

Now that the cold weather is barking at the front door.
For some reasom my xs dos not like to start by the electric start. no problem with kicking over or any thing else. The part that gets me is that it will kick start or jump start with no problem..

Is the battery weak? Could be that the drain from the sterter will not allow the voltage needed for the coils to fire. I think ( and that's dangerous) I read they or the brain box needs 10 volts or it wont fire.

      Hey Mike,

More info needed!? Using the electric starter WITHOUT a jump, does the motor turn over/spin quickly, or slowly, compared to when using the JUMP?

As has been eluded to, cold weather makes batteries weak anyways, and if it's already weak, then it gets even weaker!

ALso, have you checked and cleaned all of your connections, main battery to solenoid, solenoid to starter, battery to ground, Engine ground to Frame??

Do you have a voltmeter? Try taking a reading at the battery while cranking. If dropping to 10volts, it won't start.

When kicking it over, no power drain on battery, so TCI can get it's full voltage to operate, and fire the plugs!

I also had trouble with syth oil and cold weather sarts, when I switched back to dino th eproblem went away.

Cold weather is less than 30. I will usually put in a liner then.
I've been in more than one Hemisphere, and I wrote a book to help you do it too (or just prepare better for that week long road trip). Going Small, not just for the little guys.

              Just to let you know.
Batt is a year old checks out fine
The motor spins up quickly compared to the jump start.
have not cleaned all the connections as per listed by TC
but I will give it a shot this weekend. Thanks for the help
will get back to this to let you know

I had a similar problem, turned out to be the starter relay. Swapped it out with one I had in my "box-o-parts" and problem went away.

Course in Austin, there idea of a cold morning is anything below 65.
