  • Transmission Turmoil

    Hello

I ride an '84 xj1100 and have loved it for 16 years. The only problems untill this year have been electrical. Now I have some transmission problems. Under hard acceleration in first gear it bangs and jolts the bike. Its like it disengages and reengages very quickly. I am pretty sure it is in the transmission but I was wondering if there could be anything wrong with the shaft. It only does this in first gear. Under regular driving no problems. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Dean.

Welcome to the world of the dreaded 2nd gear syndrome... only in 1st gear! My XJ does the exact same thing. The gear edges have become beveled and enough horsepower.. it actually pushes the gears apart instead of keeping them together. Just take it easy on take-offs until you decide to do the fix or get the gears you need. I can jump on mine in any other gear, but am leary since eventually 2nd will do the same thing they say. After 16 years, I'd say you got your money's worth out of that 1st gear! I plan on going through my tranny this winter also.

Thanks for the info. I started reading a little farther and found that it seems to an issue with them. Not sure what to do. I bought an st1100 but just can't bring myself to sell the old girl. It sounds simple enough to fix. Getting at though will be tough.

          Hey Dean,

Check out the tech tips FROM THE MAIN FORUM PAGE, Repairs, Tranny, 1st and 2nd gear fix, lots of photos to show you what and how to fix it, either with the DREMMEL, or buy new gears from YAMAHA and go back in with new, but doing all the work yourself will save you tons of $$!

            Hey TC

Thanks for the tip I did see that. Looks like I should get some heat in the garage. Can you still get new gears from yamaha?
I have had lots of problems getting other parts.

              Gears still available..$$$$

              Hey Dean,

Here's the gears and their quoted price from BikeBandit,

1st gear meshes with 4th, so you need to replace both as a pair to fix, but as the tech tip shows, 2nd is usually well worn and will probably not be far behind in failing after 1st. 2nd gear meshes with 5th, so those also need to be replaced in pairs!

The Dremmel fix looks even more appealing to the pocket/wallet after seeing these, and they are US PRICES!!!
              24: GEAR,4TH WHEEL 22686-001 $103.16
              28: GEAR,1ST WHEEL 22683-001 $105.50

              16: GEAR,2ND WHEEL 22684-001 $82.41
              19: GEAR,5TH WHEEL 22687-001 $97.82
These numbers are the same from 79F as the 82XJ which will be the same as the 84 XJ!

                  Dean,
I got a used tranny from Andreashweiss when I did my 1st & 2nd fix. I was able to modify the gears at my leasure, and then put everything together. MUCH easier than trying to do everything at once, and his price is very good.
I did the "undercut" on the dogs, and moved the 2nd gear washer on my trans. That was about 15K ago, and so far, so good.
